Hunter Renfrow Trade?
Shout out to all of my RaiderNation brothers and sisters out there!! Let’s talk about something that has been on the mind of many members of RaiderNation. Will the Raiders trade or cut Hunter Renfrow? Some of you may want him to get traded, others can’t imaging letting him go, and still others don’t really care much either way. Let me say that I think it would be a mistake to let him go. Why you may ask? Because of his uncanny ability to get open in the short passing game. He could easily become Jimmy G’s best friend. I have always felt he was a special receiver and there was darn good reason they called him “3rd and Renfrow”. But of all the spectacular catches he made for 1st downs, the play that really sealed the deal for me happened in a game with the Chargers. The Raiders defense had held the Chargers to a 4th and long and the Chargers faked a punt and threw a pass to the sideline that would have been an easy 1st down, and possibly a touchdown, but Renfrow saw what was happening and bulleted to the sideline to hit Tevaughn Campbell, and knock the ball loose to give the Raiders the ball at the 40.
But as much as I would like Renfrow to continue to be a Raider, I just don’t think it happens. There are a number of things that have happened which make me feel this way. First of all, over the off-season Josh McDaniels and Larry Ziegler brought in receivers, some of which they had a history with. Jakobi Meyers, Deandre Carter, Phillip Dorsett, Cam Sims, and Kristian Wilkerson. These receivers are primarily slot receivers, same as Renfrow. Then there was the draft. In the 2nd round we traded up to get arguably the best TE in the draft, someone who is sure to become best buds with Jimmy G, after all, everyone knows Jimmy G loves him some Tight Ends (no pun intended, well, maybe just a little bit). Then to top it off, with the pick we got from trading Waller, the Raider took Tre Tucker, a lightening fast slot receiver who is also, as you might have guessed, a returner. So now we have all of these new slot receivers, and we have a new returner, but if that wasn’t enough, there is this bit of info. While the Raiders players were getting warmed up and stretching for the practice drills, Larry Ziegler was seen standing next and talking to guess who? That’s right, Hunter Renfrow. Now I have no idea what they were talking about, but I DOubt it was about the weather, and he didn’t seem to be talking to anyone else, just Renfrow. Then there is the final thing that makes me suspicious he will be gone. Hunter Renfrow’s jersey is now on sale, much the same as Waller’s was when he got traded.
So why would they want to trade or cut Renfrow? Well since it is after June 1st, the move would save them $11.2 million against the salary cap which they might be able to use to help sign Josh Jacobs, or sign free agents. As much as I hate to say it, I think the writing is on the wall my Raider brethren. I hope I am wrong, but I don’t really think so.
